In December of 2020, Jason Landry was a college student at Texas State University in San Marcos, Texas. San Marcos sits just about 45 minutes south-west of Austin. Landry was heading home to his parent's house in Missouri City near Houston on Sunday, December 13th, 2020.

In the early morning of December 14th, Landry's car was spotted by a volunteer firefighter off the side of the road near Luling, Texas. The car had veered off the road and crashed into some trees, ending up in a ditch along a fence. The lights in the car were on and the keys were in the ignition, but there was no sign of Landry at the scene. Some of his clothing was found by the road near the scene, while his phone was later discovered between the driver's seat and center console. Police dogs tracked Landry's scent from the car and down the road towards Luling, until the scent disappeared about a quarter of a mile away.

Landry's cell phone was found when his father was given access to the car by police. He was also the one to find more articles of clothing, shoes, and a watch by the scene. The clothes were processed, and investigators found a single smear of blood. They say that it is not evidence of foul play, but perhaps occurred when Landry touched the barbed wire fence at the scene. Landry's backpack was also recovered, filled with his wallet, laptop, gaming equipment, some marijuana, and other personal items. They found no evidence of blood in the car.

At the beginning of the investigation, Jason Landry's father, Kent Landry, said that there were many mistakes made. "When the highway patrolman came on the scene... he just had the car towed... He didn't even bother to take a picture..." Kent has now softened his stance on the police missteps, but one can't help but wonder how the investigation might be different now had the scene been taken seriously from the beginning.

Jason Landry's case is still being investigated nearly four years later, and the family has not given up hope. There have been several false sightings of Landry, including one in the Bronx, New York, on Friday July 22, 2022.

A young man was found unresponsive in the street near University Avenue and Reservoir Avenue just after 6:30am. NYPD reported that he had no physical injuries, and no identification. The Texas Attorney General's office did send the necessary identification documents to the NYPD, only for them to determine that the man that had been found was not Jason Landry. On Wednesday, July 27th of the same year, the man was identified and his family alerted.
