Torey Clarke Newlin was born in Texas in 1978. In 2002, he was 23 years old and a senior at Colorado State University in Fort Collins, CO majoring in Hotel and Restaurant Management. Described as an "energetic personality", he was also a soccer player and a Little League baseball coach. He and a group of friends decided to take a week long vacation to Hawaii in February of 2002, and they planned on attending a concert for the band String Cheese Incident in Lahaina during their stay.

February 16th was the concert day, and the group arrived prior to the show at the Lahaina Civic Center. Newlin was pretty well known among the fans of the band; he had been to over 100 shows since the year 2000, and was often seen juggling orange and green glow balls while the band played. At this particular show, friends report that Newlin took a large dose of LSD before the show and immediately became disoriented.

At this point, he approached a security guard at the venue and said "I don't know where I am" repeatedly. Before the security guard could do much to help, Newlin ran out of the building. It was around 8pm, and he left behind his wallet, backpack, cellphone.

Later, a law enforcement officer would state that they saw Newlin walking along the Honopiilani Highway near the Lahaina Civic Center where the concert was being held. The officer said that Newlin was walking along the highway and yelling. He was last spotted on a bench in front of Wahikuli State Wayside Park, which is about 0.4 miles South-West from the concert venue. After that last sighting, he was never seen again.

Friends searched for Newlin for two days before reporting him as a missing person to the police. The police extensively searched Lahaina without any results, though there are some unsubstantiated sightings of him reported.

Now, in 2024, Torey Newlin is still missing. At the time of his disappearance, his family stated that he was not an avid drug user, and that him taking the LSD was a one-time deal. Some speculate that he was abducted, while others believe that he drowned, due to the closeness of the beach to his last known location and his altered state.
